Oak Ridges Moraine

The Oak Ridges Moraine is a protected geological/ecological area of about 1900 square kilometres. One of the most significant landforms in southern Ontario, the moraine gets its name from the undulating hills and river valleys extending 160km from the Niagara Escarpment east to Rice Lake. It was formed 12,000 years ago by advancing and retreating glaciers. In Northumberland County, the Oak Ridges Moraine runs from Port Hope through to Brighton, and is commonly known as “the rolling hills of Northumberland.”
